'Tis the season...
It is the season of holiday cheer and all that, but it is also the season of deadlines and being busy for me, so I apologize for my lack of around-ness as I seem to do all too often.
I'll be AWOL for two weeks starting the 15th as I take my boy to the desert and the Grand Canyon for a week, and then head to Lima, Peru for my annual midwinter tropical respite. The winters in Seattle get to me if I don't reset my UV ray counter at least once.
I thought I'd share a holiday song with you all from an artist I absolutely love and who I think gets a criminally low amount of exposure in the US, the Canadian Hawksley Workman. He can be a bit of an acquired taste, but I think folks who enjoy Tom Waits and others of that ilk would really like him.
In the interest of full disclosure, this song was sent to me by a friend (GASP!) and I don't own the extremely expensive import DVD from which it comes. I really do apologize. But if this post makes just one person go out and buy a Hawksley album (I recommend "For Him and the Girls"), it will be worth it, right?
Without further ado -- Hawksley Workman's "A House or Maybe a Boat."
Lyrics:
I think I will find some wood and build a house
or maybe a boat
I don't know
Just a place to call my own
So you'll come back and bring some wine
There'll be a roof outside all night
But I have never been so good with a hammer and nails
So patience baby, Christmas may be miles away
But as today I should be done
So bring your kisses and a couple of clementines
And we'll keep the rind
'Cause the smell is just right at Christmas time
And then we'll join our voices there, let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ the saviour was born on Christmas day
So come, let's invite both our families
To sing while the piano accompanies tonight
Don't worry 'bout the dishes, come beside me dear
We'll kiss for the rest of the year if that's all right
And I think I might find some wood and build a house
Or maybe a boat
I don't know
Together... Together... Together we'll float

arbed: so true, and could be said of music from many other countries as well. I blame the record companies in large part for making it so prohibitively expensive to buy "import" music. Why a Hawksley DVD is $65 here is utterly beyond me.
Lauri: I'm so glad you like it, and thank you for the kind wishes! I'll be back with lots and lots of photos and stories next year.
Enjoy the Grand Canyon, or as we say in Arizona, "Our Canyon". It's lovely here. I'm also so jealous about your trip to Peru. Sigh. I'll be back again.
Have a wonderful time and travel safe!
Thanks, Amy! I haven't been to the Canyon in decades, so it will be like a new experience for me, too.
You'll get back to Peru. I originally had designs on going to Cusco this year, but decided I had such a long list of things to see in Lima that I missed last time, I could make a less expensive trip of it and still have a great time. Plus, I am going to see a very special person. ^_^
